A level U turn Government ministers
A level U turn Government ministers
How the A Level U turn happened:
Ministers and Conservative backbench MPs joined the calls for to row back on the algorithm for the summer 2020 exams. While Wales announced it will scrap any reliance on the Ofqual method.
A-level and GCSE students will receive either the higher grade of the OFQUAL system or what ever their teacher predicted. Penny Mordaunt was the cabinet minister who actively seeked meeting with the department of education and has made her views known on making sure teacher assessment is to be awarded.
The rub of this argument was the use of historical data from the Algorithm, which naturally had a leaning for schools that had smaller classes which are common in independent schools. The larger sixth form colleges had a 0.3 rise in top grades .Whereas independent schools had a rise of 4.7 percent.
Had they put on the exams in the first place they would not have had this problem.
Subjects that were typically studied at private schools had large grade inflation. With A* in latin and Greek rose 10.4 percent.
Subjects more popular in large sixth colleges, like sociology and businesses studies barely saw an increase of As. (0.2 percent)
The Sixth Form Colleges Association found that grades in 41 subjects in sixth form colleges were below their average of the past three years. An average of 20 per cent compared with previous years.
“The priority now is to correct this problem with immediate effect,” said Bill Watkin, the association’s chief executive.
It started with Peter Weir, Northern Ireland’s education minister, said he made the decision on GCSEs to “ease anxieties” and because the exams’ results were not based on prior performance data, unlike A-levels — which in Northern Ireland involve modular exams and coursework.
Followed by Michael Wilshaw, for Ofsted head inspector, jumped onto the Radio and said the Government should now accept teacher-predicted grades “This is an exceptional year; we should follow the Northern Ireland example and the Scottish example,” he said.
And hey presto. Williamson does a U turn.
International Baccalaureate diploma are doing the same. Upping their grades.
The IB Organisation, which manages around 170,000 said on Monday that it was issuing new grades.
While writing to universities to inform them about a U-turn and give greater emphasis to coursework.
