Applying to University after A-level grades

A levels that are the most common route into university using the UCAS system.

However massive change is coming to the whole exercise of university entrance. The future upheaval will increase the focus on quality and remove the obsession of volume. Just how universities should be! We have two large over arching pressures now directing onto the university admissions 1) The loss of A levels as a guide for the right pupils for the right courses because of A level cancellation

2) the alternative training of pupils on gaining knowledge through youtube videos - As explained by Jordan Peterson.

3) the growth of unconditional offers to pupils - Using predicted A level grades

The removing of controls in 2015 of universities limits of student recruitment - Massive increase in competition for each student for their fees they generate. - Recruit as many students as possible was the new game in town for the admissions officers. A blog here on how A levels got into this mess.

Increased competition with sixth form pupils being offered unconditional offers regardless of their results including giving incentives such as offer will only be unconditional if the university is their number one choice. Undermining the A level objective and motivation of pupils.

The Office of students the watchdog in the UK and UCAS said that unconditional offers made students more likely to miss their predicted A levels grades by two or more A level grades. And when it was their second choice pupils are forced to consider resits.

The affect of this unconditional offers from the university drags down the quality of the course as it has to accommodate a large number of pupils who may not be able to keep up. The course gets weakened.

  • Increase in student debt on a lower quality course

  • Increase number of students who drop out on the course and feel let down by the process.

The likely outcome is A level results will come out earlier than they currently do in mid August.

The outcome that most people want is for Pupils and candidates not to be getting their offers until the final A level results have been published. The removal on the reliance on predicted A level grades. Just the real A level grades will be used.

Universities will have to work harder at doing the things that only they can do. Which is to bring students together in a conductive, learning, happy environment to learn. Just as they should be doing.
