Universities are under pressure from blockchain
A youtube video caught my attention in its simple message. The Ted x Boulder lecture discusses how blockchain process and ledger properties along with online learning will accelerate the decline in mass university physical attendance. While boasting online learning. This will not only have an impact on University degrees but filter down to sixth form and A level exams.
Here are my key notes from the talk found here:
We now have a’ just in time learning opportunity’ for the online learning growth of learning
Universities were originally and still are just a collection of those who want to teach something along with others who want to learn something. The university essentially was a collective bargaining to recruit and maintain high levels of learning. Like Plato's academy which existed without a diploma's, degrees, curriculum, university without the explicate course construct.
Why are we teaching the same way we are teaching 1000 years ago. Now the only difference is a distraction in the lecture hall.I,e. The mobile phone Universities recently have now become mostly judge on research rather than learning. Especially as Jordan Peterson discusses the challenges humanities courses face.
while Universities entrance and attendance has become expensive. Waiting in the wings is silicon valley's tech giants Waiting to disrupt 4.6Trillion dollar education market. It Started in 2011 - Mooc. Massive course. 120k Students initially. Only 2 percent completed though there was no stamp at the end. Had there been a stamp at the end of these courses then how many who have finished?
Big data are getting better with their algorithms at providing Individualised learning goals. Not too high as to be unreachable and high enough to show progress.
These algorithms are able to turn education into the best thing about computer games levels. Incremental growth of learning.
Machine learning is getting very good at cobbling together Non universities degree and then going out to get a job. The obstacle in all of this are job adverts. More often than not they say they need a degree from an offline university>
Block chain has now arrived and will give learners timestamp for a binding agent for both curricula and qualifications and giving the credence that comes with completing degrees or parts of degrees. .
The result of all of this is universities will scale back and focus on things they do best and become de politicised.
