Maths needed for a career in coding
We are always interested in the Maths needed for progress in careers. in light we have come across an introduction email for a Coding boot camp. A boot camp that is able to bring you up to speed as a software engineer.
Perhaps when tackling the question of doing Maths at any level, be it GCSE or A levels.
One should consider coding as a key part of the long term plan of the qualification.
We reached out to one of the boot camps to see what Maths level is needed to thrive in a software role. A role that is increasingly being deployed in almost every company.
Makes you wonder why anyone bothers with expensive schooling or university. See the blog post on the future of universities post Covid.
Below was the response.
Hey ,
Thank you for your time on the phone there.
What we require you to be comfortable with
Python - Be comfortable with creating functions, objects and classes. The biggest piece is understanding control flow, using Loops both For and While, and IF/ELSE statements. The secondary piece is then understanding the basics of Pandas, and NumPY.
Statistics - Be comfortable with the calculating interquartile ranges, identifying outliers, normal distributions, the basics of bayesian rules/theory, standard deviations, mean/median/mode, and confidence intervals.
Stats: Learn what statistical significance, confidence intervals, chi-square tests, Bayes' Theorem and much more are in Think Stats, a free book that uses real-world examples written in Python.
Complete all exercises in the Khan Academy Probability & Statistics course. This will take you through the basics.
Python + Data: You will use the pandas library a lot during this course, therefore strongly recommended you learn the basics before starting!
Podcasts: There is a plethora of excellent podcasts about data science. Learn about k-means while you clean, or about random walks on a random walk! Data Skeptic, Data Framed and although this one stopped last year there is still a bank of good episodes there Linera Digressionsare two of my favourites.
While the exam house has started to offer ACCA exams.
