Topes Calland - Therapist discusses the current situation

Topes Calland, a teenage therapist who provides therapy and guidance for teenagers , helping them learn and prepare for exams. Topes has this to say about the current state of exams for the summer 2020:

I've been an Exam tutor for 13 years; Pupils X did all of his work in a classroom, over a period of a year, under my supervision; and to register him for a coursework-based exam, the exam board confirmed that he was doing all of his work under teacher supervision and continued assessment (otherwise they couldn't have registered him as it would be impossible to prove that it was his work). In short, when the exam board accepted him for an exam that's entirely coursework, they accepted that the work was being continually monitored as his own, and they confirmed that we're in a position both to assess and confirm his progress and achievement. While making sure his access arrangements for exams were suitable.

I do feel sorry for the kids who registered as independent candidates for exam assessment and have been slugging away by themselves for an exam they can't sit and with work that can't be validated. Awful situation for them.

For people who just work by themselves and their competence can only be proven in an exam, what happens when they are denied the opportunity to demonstrate the work that they have done and to get an award for it? I suppose that - as has to happen with a coursework based A Level - exam centres may have to prove to the exam boards that there is someone continually monitoring progress. That's where one’s affiliation with The Exam House comes in very handy, as you can demonstrate that your clients can both be taught and monitored, as well as just examined!
